If you really think about it, your barista is possibly the most important person in your life. There might be other contenders — your boss does pay you, after all — but only your barista can truly get you out of the lowest point of your day, every day. A good coffee isn’t just going to cheer you up; it’s sending you back out into the world better prepared.
At this point, our baristas double as stand-in parents — both underappreciated and, in our opinion, a bit overlooked. We’ve updated CUPS app to help spread appreciation for awesome service by adding a new feature that allows you tip your baristas, even when you’ve got no cash on hand! Besides, as we all know – tipping makes you sexier!
Here’s how it works:
1) After selecting your drink of choice, tap “Checkout.”
2) On the “Checkout” page, tap the “Tip” button and select the dollar amount of the tip.
3) The tip will reflect on the screen.
4) Show your phone to the barista as usual, and they will enter the coffee shop code to complete your order.

Q: How am I charged?
A: At the end of each month we will process all your tips on one transaction and charge the card you put on file.
Q: Can I approve the charge before it happens?
A: We won’t prompt you to approve the balance; however, you can view the tips you left for each transaction at any point by looking at “My History” in the app. If you see something that doesn’t look right you can message us at any time and we will be happy to take care of it!
Q: Will my credit card be kept on file?
A: Nope! CUPS works with a secure mobile-payment clearing company called Stripe—used by Squarespace, Twitter and other mobile companies—to process your payments. At no point does CUPS see your credit card details or other personal payment information.
Q: Will all coffee shops accept tipping?
A: It is the coffee shop’s choice to accept tipping within the app. If the coffee shop does not accept tips within CUPS app, the “tip” button will not appear.
Q: Can I get a record of my charges?
A: We’ll send you a e-receipt when your card is charged.
